Golden Brodie rides elevators and finds history

I work daily at expanding my golden horizons. Each day my training broadens my possibilities of one day perhaps being a therapy dog…so I’m riding elevators now.  Elevators are just a fact of life that I will need to understand as my world broadens.  Gotta not be thrown by those doors that seemingly suddenly open sideways…acclimate to the up & down feeling in my dog gut when the box stops or takes off going up…gotta walk into that box and sit down…give peeps their space…move to the back…you know all of the etiquette of elevator riding.  Next time you ride one…look for this name OTIS.  I noticed that OTIS is always in those boxes.  Here’s why.

In 1853, the inventor Elisha Otis demonstrated his stellar emergency spring that allowed a platform to stop and suspend itself.  That day people who attended  P.T. Barnum’s Traveling World’s Fair in New York, gasped with disbelief when Elisha stood on a platform raised 40 feet in the air…and with his swift sword slashed the rope that held him & the platform mid-air.  The platform dropped only a foot and stopped… And that my friends was the beginning of  Otis Elevator Co. that lead to safe elevators and the construction of those “skyscrapers” we all admire.

Just a little info nugget for ya…let’s go ride some elevators.  Pick up those paws!

Brodie marvels at escape artists: Rusty and Sunny

It’s in my dog genes to want to run and hide…jig and jag…get out there and run like the wind…but I must admit that I am a homebody…you’ll never find me running away…I have way too much to leave my happy golden space…and my training keeps me safe by coming when called.  Now Rusty and Sunny…those little escape artists think differently…after all they are wild and precious.

Rusty the Red Panda ran away from his home in the National Zoo in Washington, DC in 2013.  He pushed the boundaries of his safe life and headed out to Adams Morgan…a popular dining and entertainment spot on the fringes of the zoo…a lovely and diverse… vibrant neighborhood.  I’m guessing he enjoyed his escapade…and eventually he was found.  Hopefully, Sunny the Red Panda who escaped from the Norfolk Virginia Zoo just this week...will be safe until she is found by the many volunteers who continue looking for her.  The word is she was trying to get away from Thomas the Male Red Panda…mating season is on…guess Sunny needed to express herself by fleeing the scene.

These red cat-bears are really great looking creatures…so furry, full of life and kinda…sorta…thrill seekers?!?  Sending out golden prayers for Sunny’s safe returned to her home in the Virginia Zoo.

Brodie shares about the “Big Rehearsal”

Who knew?  Stand-ins for the President Elect and the coming First Lady…stand-ins for VP Elect and his wife…practice…practice…practice walks down the steps of the US Capitol to the podium… to assigned seats…walking down Pennsylvania Avenue…waves to imaginary crowds…one big, huge dress rehearsal for the nation’s 58th Presidential Inaugural swearing-in and the Inaugural Parade.  This past Sunday was a dry-run… a stunning effort to address this immensely…monumental logistical, security, protocol, media coverage, crowd control quadrennial inaugural event.  As a golden who does not like to miss anything…here’s the schedule of events…Hail to the Chief!

Brodie streaks through the 2nd floor of the “House”

Well…if you wanted to… you could do the same!  Being honest… I virtually ran through the living quarters of the first family on the second floor of the White House…I’m just obsessed with the transition of power…and the move-in…move-out of the “House of the People”.  So, I ran through that second floor like a golden streak, sniffing every corner and checking for crumbs.  Don’t miss this slice of history that I dug up for you…as we approach the 58th Presidential Inaugural.

My favorite retriever…canine moments were on the “Grand Staircase”…when I was ripping and tearing…skittering on those marvelously carpeted marble steps…I was in awe of the impressive list of folks that have taken those stairs.  I took pause…ok… little golden humor :).

Brodie digs “Fireside Chats”

Ears up!.. how have past presidents of the United States chosen to communicate with their people? It’s an ever-changing process that evolved..Abe Lincoln (16) had an open door…people lined up outside of the White House and he spoke directly to them…there was no radio…no telephone…just face time and letters…a slow way…but yet effective.  Franklin Delano Roosevelt (32) communicated through weekly “Fireside Chat” broadcasts over home radios..television was coming and not everyone had a home phone… cell phones didn’t exist or e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on.  So, you gotta listen to FDR and one of his radio chats.  Thousands listened weekly each Sunday to FDR’s broadcast. Picture peeps huddled close to their radio…picture the family dog…ok and the family cat…all sitting in due reverence…carefully listening to each word of their president.  Makes me want to build a fire…a golden fire.

Brodie purrs about cats in The White House

Meow!  Yes, that is where this is going.  My golden retriever whiskers want you to read some feline facts about cats who lived in The White House...beginning with Thomas Jefferson all…the way through to George W. Bush.  I personally enjoyed learning that “Once, during a winter visit to General Grant’s headquarters, Lincoln rescued three half-frozen kittens from a Civil War battlefield telegraph hut.  He tucked them in his coat and brought them back to the White House to join Tabby before finding a good home for them.”  Tabby was Tad’s cat, Lincoln’s son.

Just think…rescuing animals has been going on since people have cared.  Now…now that is a hopeful ending. Meow and peace peeps.

Brodie discovers 43 crumbling busts?

I was simply surfing the Internet looking for a golden find…and voila!…yes you need to check out this truly cool man who recycles concrete, lives in the great Commonwealth of Virginia and who could not dispose of 43 president heads…I know..what?  Well, history gives us 44 presidents to date…right?!….but the bust money ran out for making a 44 head…and now here comes 45…that is the next President… Mr. T  is coming up on January 20… 2017 or bust…paws up peeps!

Brodie shares the history of the Candy Cane

I love peppermint…especially when it is in the form of a candy cane.  Yeah, I learned about them my first Christmas…I golden nosed my way through the decorations on the tree and found this little red and white striped gem…now I look forward each Christmas to getting a piece of the sweet peppermint…however, now I wait for it…I’ve learned to back off the tree…having said that…did you know that small amounts peppermint are good for dogs?  Well…it’s true…and by the way here’s the history of the beloved ‘J’ shape like a shepherds crook…so the back story of the candy cane is spiritual and came in celebration of the nativity.

P.S.  Hope you watched this YouTube of two yellow labs cleansing a Christmas tree of candy canes…the big dude ate them all!  HA!  Love it!  Rock on retrievers!

Brodie’s golden In and Out List

I know that the Washington Post is known annually for its listing of What’s In and What’s Out as we approach a New Year.  Well, I can’t wait… my golden dog ears and eyes have been keenly listening and observing, ready for the scoop…or the poop…which ever you prefer to call this.  So….read on and consider my golden outlook on the in and out list… be sure to recall what events occurred this year…and oh …what a year it has been…Peace baby
