Allergy sufferers need not worry about being around sneezeweed.  Interesting that this flower has a history of use when crushed to make a form of snuff that caused sneezing. Fascinating!  Legend also says that these flowers sprang from the ground where Helen of Troy’s tears fell.

Golden Brodie barks: Amelia, where are you?

Dogs…that’s right…four border collies trained in finding long-buried bones are sniffing out the discovery of a life time…an answer to whatever happened to Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan?

Well…the four are searching… wearing booties to protect their paws from 80 degree ground temperatures, hundreds of thousands of coconut crabs and sharp volcanic rock fragments.  Sound like fun?  Yeah, these well-trained dogs are doing their job and going for the find of their dog lives.

These dogs can hunt!  Seriously…hoping they find the remaining bones of Amelia so we can put her to rest in our hearts and minds…that would be a golden moment for all.

Uncomplicated thoughts: Reflection

History: Paying tribute…D Day, June 4, 1944

“On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France.”

Read on to a united front victory.

Remembering those who gave their all for our freedom.

History Nugget: Why is there a Memorial Day?

Ever wonder why there is a Memorial Day.  Well, read and thank Mary Logan… a woman who observed, with caring and emotional eyes…first hand the devastation left on the landscape immediately following the Civil War.

Thank you Mary Logan.

History Nugget: D-Day…Watch, listen, learn, never forget

Published on Nov 11, 2013

“British artists Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss accompanied by numerous volunteers, took to the beaches of Normandy with rakes and stencils in hand to etch 9,000 silhouettes representing fallen people into the sand. The original team consisted of 60 volunteers, but as word spread nearly 500 additional local residents arrived to help with the tribute to “The Fallen 9,000”.

Hear the bagpipes chant Amazing Grace and remember The Fallen.

Brodie shares with National Pride “Flags In”

My golden retriever heart has heaps of pride for the coming Memorial Day.  American flags are already flying in my neighborhood…the red, white and blue will wave in the breeze throughout my community…store fronts, restaurants, gas stations…lining the avenues and streets with the “stars and stripes.”

Arlington National Cemetery has already put “Flags In” honoring America’s fallen heroes.  Since 1948, The Old Guard has placed American flags at gravesites…this year more than 228,000 flags.

This is quite a sight to see…I am told.  Yeah, I can’t go there…but I understand..

only service dogs are permitted and yes…I will respect and honor these rules.  It’s my way of showing my respect to our honored fallen heroes.  Paws up with gratitude for those who gave it all to keep us safe and free.

Brodie’s History Nuggets: old is new again?!

Stop, look and golden listen…there is not a day that goes by that I do not hear about fake news…fake news on this side…fake news from that side…fake news rolling in the middle…

Just want you to know that fake news was alive and well during George Washington‘s time.  That’s right…I mean that is correct…General George Washington experienced slander through forged letters that attempted to undermine his commitment to winning the Revolutionary War and freeing the colonies from the heavy and oppressive rule of King George III.  Interesting that these slanders seem to have been an inside job from a Loyalist, who fled to England and died there. But even more interesting, Gen. Washington went on to become President Washington, the first president of the United States of America.  Now that was a genuine golden beginning…

Brodie brings a golden history nugget: Immigrant squirrel sponsored by Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin loved Eastern gray squirrels…loved them so much that during his diplomatic services (1770) in England he sent word to his wife Deborah to send some of the gray creatures across the pond to him.  He would then give them as gifts.

Mungo was the treasured gray who met a rather viscous death…so loved was the furry gray that Mr. Franklin wrote a special elegy.

Golden squirrel love and paws up!
